Great Neck Estates Village Court: What to Expect at Traffic Court

David A. Arpino • Dec 11, 2019

So you find yourself issued a citation for a traffic violation that is pending in the Great Neck Estates Village Court. That Court is located at 4 Gateway Drive, Great Neck, New York 11021.

For starters, the doors to this Court open at 6 p.m., Check in with the clerk is on a first come first serve basis. By 5:30 there is a line forming outside of the courthouse. If you work a normal 9-5 job, you will likely need to leave yourself extra time because the Court opens during the height of rush hour and traffic will be heavy heading to the court.

Since check-in is on a first come first serve basis, you will want to get there early. The later you get there, the more people there will be in front of you to negotiate. Usually the court calendar is around 50 or so traffic infractions. It will take the prosecutor about an hour and a half to finish conferencing with everyone there.

If the offense is not serious, and you otherwise have a clean driving record. The Prosecutor may offer you a reduction to the charge of VTL 1202 which is a parking violation. Fines and surcharges will total $325 for a plea of guilty to a parking violation. This is generally a good outcome because there will be no points assessed on your license and a parking conviction does not show up on your DMV abstract in the future.

At the end of the day, you will spend at least 3 total traveling to and from the court and in court itself depending on how close you live to Great Neck Estates. If you do not get there early to check-in with the clerk, it can be considerably longer than that.
